LISTENING TO WHAT LIES BELOW THE SURFACE

What if grief could be met not with avoidance, but with marigolds, candlelight, and the slow, sacred work of building an altar?

The Ofrenda Ritual: Bridging Art and Death is a documentary that explores that question. It represents a depth-psychology research study conducted as part of my doctoral research at Pacifica Graduate Institute. It explores how the Mexican ofrenda ritual of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) becomes a living vessel for healing complicated grief.

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate"
- Carl Jung

The documentary captures the arc of this process, from the workshop's first anxious moments to its quiet relief and acceptance. Through footage of participants building their altars and excerpts from their interviews, the film makes visible the embodied, imaginal dimensions of grief that written research alone cannot convey.

This work speaks to art therapists, depth psychologists, expressive arts practitioners, and anyone navigating loss who senses that healing asks to be made, not merely talked through.

Watch the documentary and explore the full research study below to see how ritual artmaking opens a path into the deeper, ancestral dimensions of grief and healing.

Original research examining the role of artmaking and the Ofrenda tradition in grief and healing — a practice rooted in Dia de los Muertos that opens an ancient, culturally grounded pathway through loss.
